Congratulations to the Oahu District Motor Pool for winning the Annual Maintenance Baseyard Storm Water Training Quiz Competition! The training and quiz event took place in July, with heavy competition between the 13 maintenance crews. The Motor Pool had the highest average score on the post-training quiz, with an average of 19.78 out of 20 possible points.

Between the shores of Hawaii and the coasts of California lies a pooling of plastic waste spreading over 600,000 square miles across the Pacific Ocean known as the “Pacific Garbage Patch.” This Halloween, “litter-ally” be the change you want to see by making a green statement with your very own do-it-yourself Pacific Garbage Patch costume made from trash and other household items.

The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Division, Oahu District (DOT-HWYS) has numerous roadway construction projects that vary in size and complexity. All construction projects, regardless of size or area of land disturbance, must implement best management practices (BMPs) to control sediment and prevent erosion.

DOT-HWYS most recently completed construction at the Windward Baseyard in Kaneohe. Improvements included repairing and repaving old, damaged asphalt and rerouting storm water drainage to reduce the potential for contact with pollution sources and to allow for more accurate storm water quality monitoring.
