Project Description

Trash Baseline Study

To better understand the amount and composition of trash coming off our highways, HDOT Highways is installing trash traps in open channels across Oahu. The purpose of these traps is to capture and study the man-made debris that enters the storm drain system and eventually reaches our streams and oceans.

Sources of trash include unsecured loads, disposal by pedestrians, and windblown trash from adjacent areas. By better understanding the composition of this trash, HDOT Highways will be able to devise a more strategic approach to reduce this trash load in the future.
