Today is Earth Day 2020! This year will prove to be quite different from years past, making for a unique 50th anniversary of this global event. The 2020 theme is Climate Action, inspired by the many climate challenges presented in recent years. EarthDay.org explains that, “Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable. Earth Day was a unified response to an environment in crisis — oil spills, smog, rivers so polluted they literally caught fire.”

While you can’t get outside and join a large clean up or plant a new forest this year, here are some simple ways to celebrate Earth Day 2020, while also complying with the current social distancing orders.

  • Plant something small in your yard or a small container
  • Enjoy the outdoors by going on a walk or bike ride around the neighborhood
  • Join a virtual celebration
  • Implement some new eco-friendly habits like taking shorter showers or limiting your use of electricity
  • Pledge to keep our storm drains clean
